pentagon correspondent barbara starr joins me by phone. barbara, you've been dicking into this. what more do you know? >> this sad story emerged late last night, randi. the pentagon is trying to assemble what they can at this point about the service record of chris kyle and the man taken into custody, 25 years old. he was caught by police in texas after a brief pursuit, has been arraigned on two counts of capital murder. another man was shot along with chris kyle at this shooting range. the initial reports are that the men had gathered there and they were helping this former marine learn to shoot again. chris kyle had been very involved in helping veterans with posttraumatic stress. so there is a belief that the marine -- the suspect may have been involved with posttraumatic stress. i have to tell you, i think all of that still remains under investigation as to exactly what transpired. throughout the navy s.e.a.l. community, special operations forces, really, they are remembering a man who in their mind, their world truly was a legend for what he militarily accomplished during those tours

according to the sheriff, he's unemployed. we don't know much more than that. however, our pentagon correspondent barbara starr tells us the suspect is a former marine himself who left the service in 2010 after four years. he served in "operation iraqi freedom" for 12 months from 2007 to 2008 and in haiti after the earthquake and received ten medals, including several for his service in iraq. >> terribly tragic. thank you, susan candiotti in new york. >>> chris kyle was well known to millions of americans. he was the author of the best-selling book "american sniper" and he appeared in the nba reality show "stars earned stripes." nick valencia joins us now. what can you tell us about kyle? >> chris kyle grew up in east texas and big affinity for horses and grew up handling guns for a young age. he went on to be a profific sniper for the navy s.e.a.l.s. he chronicled this in his book "the american sniper." he became infamous among iraqi insurgence. he had killed more than 150 insurgents and, as you mentioned, his legacy lived far beyond the service community. he was known to millions

chief pentagon correspondent jim maiklaszewski joins us now. what do we know? >> it's a tragic story in so many ways. this marine corps reservist, a 25-year-old by the name of eddie ray routh, is in custody facing two capital murder charges in the deaths of that former navy s.e.a.l. sniper, chris kyle, and a friend. but the police still cannot pinpoint a motive. now, friends say that it appeared that routh was suffering ptsd, post-traumatic stress, from his service in iraq, and kyle has a record of working directly with ptsd victims from the wars in iraq and afghanistan, and trying to help them. now, according to reports, this was the first time that kyle and his friend had ever met with routh and they were at a gun range about 50 miles outside of ft. worth saturday when suddenly without warning, routh allegedly pulled a hand gun and shot and killed both of the other men at point-blank range. he's in custody and there is reports that he had to be tasered in his cell overnight for some kind of disruption there in the texas jail, but the search is on for a motive. and i can tell you th

to take a closer look at how that hostage situation was resolved. let's bring in our pentagon correspondent, chris lawrence. he's joining us on the very sophisticated operation that freed that little boy and what similar operations could look like in years ahead. chris, what are you seeing? >> reporter: yeah, wolf. we're now learning that the fbi used drones likely provided from the u.s. military to keep around the clock surveillance on that particular bunker. that coming from former fbi official tom fuentes who has been talking to his sources. the future and what the fbi may be able to do down the line goes way beyond what was done here. >> reporter: a little boy barricaded in a bunker with a killer. as the crisis stretched into a seventh day, an fbi hostage rescue team practiced how to save him. law enforcement sources now say the fbi built a mockup of the bunker and trained on how they'd go in. but how would they know what was happening below? a law enforcement source tells cnn authorities managed to slip a camera into the hideout. >> we're going to try to introduce microph
